Network in Defense of Humanity mobilized in solidarity with Venezuela

THE NETWORK IN DEFENSE OF HUMANITY MOBILIZED IN SOLIDARITY WITH VENEZUELA AND RESPECT FOR SOVEREIGNTY AND RIGHT TO LIVE IN PEACE IN OUR AMERICA.

The news arriving from Venezuela attracts the attention of the whole world. As part of the generalized harassment of the Bolivarian Revolution set in motion is another phase of the media war declared since the very beginning of the political process headed by Hugo Chávez by the hegemonic transnational media and local and private means, spokespersons of the interests of imperialism.

At this time it is of utmost necessity that the work of the Network in Defense of Humanity that appeared in a similar scenario ten years ago when the government of Bush Jr. attacked with these same weapons to prepare a military intervention of Cuba.

For this reason the Network is today in full mobilization. Here are some of the actions done:

This past February 13 it issued a Communiqué Against fascist violence in Venezuela and alerted regarding the events that occurred and denounced that they are products of a deliberate plan “to move Venezuela towards a civil war thereby opening the doors for an intervention by the empire” while calling “on all those who have differences with the Bolivarian Project to express their opinions in a truly peaceful manner” without altering order and public life, in the different spaces guaranteed by the Constitution. This Communiqué has been published in web sites of the network, reprinted by the digital press and alternate sites and widely spread by the social networks. It now has the signatures of important personalities that include Pablo González Casanova, Roberto Fernández Retamar, Frei Betto, Gianni Vattimo, Atilio Borón, Luciano Vasapollo, Alfonso Sastre, Stella Calloni, Salim Lamrani, Belén Gopegui, Héctor Díaz Polanco, ChiquiVicioso, Fernando Martínez Heredia and more than a hundred intellectuals, artists, scientists, social fighters and, in general, men and women interested in justice, peace and defense of the rights and sovereignty of the Venezuelan people.

As part of the Program of the International Book Fair of Havana, there was a meeting of intellectuals last February 15 in the headquarters of OSPAAAL and another was called and finally held on Wednesday, February 19 in the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress. Both times ideas were exchanged on the present and future work of the Network and importance of broadening its influence to include other sectors and participants, mostly young people. The call made by Venezuealan historian Carmen Bohórquez, who coordinates with the Network internationally to expose falsehoods circulating events in that country. She warns of the advance of a fascist plan, similar to so many others perpetrated against our peoples of America throughout its history.

On Monday, February 17 during the presentation of two books by Professor Luciano Vasapollo of the La Sapienza University of Rome who coordinates the work of the Network in Italy, Cuban intellectuals, Abel Prieto and Isabel Monal referred to the works of the Venezuelan Foreign Affairs minister, Elías Jaua, regarding the triumph of the past Summit of CELAC in Cuba. They said it was a spark for the imperialist interventionist’s desires and emphasized the importance of the Network during these difficult times: a Network that not only groups intellectuals and artists but reaches the most humble sectors, to all sensitive persons of the planet. Also it is a declaration of solidarity with the Venezuelan people and government that was released by the Organizing Committee of the 23rd International Book Fair of Havana, Cuba. It enjoys a massive attendance of intellectuals from more than 40 countries around the world.

That same night, in a Cuban television program, the Round Table, was dedicated to the situation in Venezuela and the work of the Network in Defense of Humanity. It counted on the participations of the writers, Stella Calloni, Raúl Pérez Torres, Frei Betto and Omar González. This latter is the coordinators of the Network in Cuba.

The panelists agreed on the importance of international public opinion to mobilize and condemn the acts of destabilization of the right wing and crude media manipulation of those events; of defense of peace and the democratically elected president, Nicolás Maduro.

They called attention, also to the neofascist nature reached by these actions and threatening other countries of the region who are going through democratic processes for a social change with a large popular participation, equally in other forums. He also insisted on the role of the Network in other spheres of contemporary society as a space for integration and dialogue.

The words and actions promoted by the Network in Defense of Humanity regarding the situation in Venezuela and the desperate onslaught of the extreme right in this country and other Latin American and Caribbean nations will continue to occur during the next few days as part of a permanent surveillance for the right of justice and peace of the peoples of Our America.
