On the proposal of Macri to suspend Venezuela from Mercosur. Yes Sir!

As expected, only twelve hours after his electoral victory, in a press conference yesterday, Mauricio Macri gave proof of his vocation to become a proxy of Washington in the region. In league with the wishes of the White House he lashed out against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and confirmed that he would request the suspension of that country as member of Mercosur because, according to him, that country had infringed the clause of democracy by “persecuting the opposition and not respecting the freedom of speech”.

To overthrow the Bolivarian government is an old obsession of the government of the United States and has gone out of its way with no scruple whatsoever to achieve it. Until now its offensive had only found one buddy willing to advance along that rocky trail: the Colombian narco political Álvaro Uribe.

Juan M. Santos who succeeded him in the Palacio Nariño was not willing to play such dangerous game. What’s more the conservative Colombian president has gone out of his way to thank Venezuela for its collaboration in the peace process undergone in Havana. Macri seems to ignore these subtleties of international politics and being a man fearful with a fragile memory, is a dangerous combination if ever there was one.

He should be reminded of the unconditional submission to the Empire already practiced in Argentina during the Menem period referred to as “carnal relations” and that the country paid with blood for such a stupidity. It is difficult to understand why this mistake should be repeated except to fulfill the secret agreement with the White House that we will not delay in finding out.

Macri seems to also be unaware that last October 28 the Bolivarian Republic was reelected to integrate the Human Rights Council of the United Nations. The General Assembly approved the resolution with 131 votes in favor of a total of 192 members.

To make these accusations Macri ignored a very significant fact that ratifies Venezuela in an organism that had the participation of countries such as France, United States, Germany and Japan and is an act of total irresponsibility or an example of dangerous amateurism in the management of international relations. Does he believe that the countries of Mercosur are going to follow his anti Bolivian temper tantrum? Does he ignore that such a decision requires consensus of all its members? To start the Uruguayan foreign affairs minister, Rodolfo Nin Novoa was quick to state the “he sees no reason to apply the democracy clause of Venezuela in Mercosur”. And probably, the Brazilian government will follow suit in which case the threats of Macri would become a product of his unviable policy.

Returning to the case of the political opposition in Venezuela, what would be Macri’s response if Daniel Scioli follows the example of Leopoldo López and dismisses the election results and Shorty after December 10 intensifies this campaign calling upon his followers to use international contacts and boost, with more force violent actions demanding the extra constitutional removal of an “illegitimate government appealing to a procedure denied by the constitution and the laws of the republic? Hypothetically would Scioli be considered a “political opponent” or would he be called, following the regulation in course as a political involved in the crime of sedition that in this country has a sentence between five an twenty five days in prison. Venezuelan laws are similar to Argentine ones and both to the United States in which this crime has a penalty that, in some cases, reaches perpetual imprisonment or death penalty. In fact, the wife of López was present in the festivities of the bunker of Cambiemos who is not a “political dissident” unjustly persecuted by the Bolivarian Government.
It is the ringleader of an attempt to alter constitutional order in forced in his country and overthrow a government in place by a system of elections that former US president, Jimmy Carter qualified as “the most trustworthy and transparent than ours”.

For this he counted on the collaboration of Uribe to recruit a group of mercenaries disguised as heroic “young university students” who bravely fought to restore freedoms violated in their country. Sent out into the street to force the overthrow of Maduro and a collapse of institutional order used all form imaginable of violence from burning schools and nursery schools to the destruction of public and private transportation combined with violent attacks of universities and centers of health, erecting “guarimbas” (barricades to control movement of the population to beat them or killing with impunity all those who opposed their arrogance) and several assassinations. As a result of this unrest 43 persons died, mostly followers of Chavism or persons of the forces of State security. Shortly after it was discovered that most of the guarimberos” were Colombian paramilitaries and there was almost no Venezuelan university student involved in these tragic events. The justice of the Chavist dictatorship condemned him to a penalty of 13 years, 9 months, 7 days and 12 hours in prison. Lieutenant colonel Antonio Tejero Molina also wanted to alter constitutional law by taking by assault the Congress of Deputies. In his crusade of restoration “tejerazo” produced not a single death nor were there material losses of any kind. However, Spanish justice sentenced him to 30 years in prison, expulsion from the Army and loss of military grade and barred for the length of the sentence. No one considered him a political opponent but a seditions soldier. Worse is the case of López for the blood spilt for is fault and the destruction for his appeal to violence. Nevertheless Venezuelan justice was unbelievably benign. But Macri did not see it that way and continues calling him an opponent ill-treated by a despotic power. A bad beginning in issues of foreign policy. And a worrying step in an attempt to advance in the neo liberal “reformation” of Mercosur, another old ambition of the United States to make it flow with the Pacific Alliance and the European Union controlled by the Troika.
