translation Cuba _ Network in Defense of Humanity
On February 20 of 2016 in the Nicolás Guillén Salon of the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fort and as part of the International Book Fair awards were given in the 13th 2016 International Contest on essays countercurrent Thought and the 4th event of the Special Prize, on a Species in Danger, in this event 88 works were presented from 17 countries with a large variety of subjects covered. The Jury was formed by Pedro Pablo Rodríguez, of Cuba, and Ximena de la Barra, of Chile and Ángel Guerra, of Cuba.
Prior to the event Ximena de la Barra launched of a book of the essays awarded in 2015. Also taking part was Omar González coordinator in Cuba of the Network in Defense of Humanity who referred to the creation of spaces for debate and diffusion of anti hegemonic thought as one of the priorities of this movement. Also shown was a small audiovisual material on the ten years of the founding of the Network.
Following Pedro Pablo Rodríguez read the sworn agreement of the Jury. The members decided unanimously to grant the First Prize of the Essay Countercurrent Thought “Juan Rulfo in Northeastern Thailand: Transference and Solidarity” considering “the literary quality of the text that promotes values of solidarity, demonstrating the universal character of diverse cultures and the value inter culture pointing to the welfare of all”, The author is a young writer and transalator of Tailandia Peera Songkunnatham.
Also unanimously the Honorary Mention was awarded to “Practice and Poetry in the art of performance as Resistance in Latin America” by Rodrigo Alejandro Arenas Ibacache. Other mentions went to “The Construction of Collective Memory and Social Identity; the Simmelian perspective by Andrea Mello; “The memory of the Cuba-United States relations: On the road towards normalization” by Faustino Covarrubias Gómez; “Religious freedom, authoritarian religiosity, modern ethos: its projection into the religious thought of José Martí” by Ariel Zaldívar Batista; and Marx and Martí in body and soul: culture against economy” by Rolando Bellido Aguilera.
Regarding the Special Prize of “A species in danger” in its 4th event the jury decided to unanimously award the essay “Koyaanisqatsi”, by Lillian Álvarez Navarrete of Cuba “for the rigor, brilliance and argumentative force of her analysis of the Conference of Parts, Paris 2015 within the Framework of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change and her reference to the visionary thought of Fidel Castro on the subject”.
At the same event the Jury granted four mentions: Politices da Gestão e Educação Ambiental para Resíduos Solidos na Economia de Mercado, a Obsolescência Planejada e os limites da Sustentabilidade no Capitalismo” (Environmental management of Education for Solid Wastes in the Market Economy and Planetary Obsolescence of the limits of Sustainability in Capitalism”) by Philippe Pomier Layrargues; ALBA: Climate Change and Extrativism. Crisis, risk perception and opportunities of goods for policy makers”: by José Ángel Pérez García;
Legacy and fragility. The Sacred mestizo: Demolition of patriarchy”: by Carlos Eduardo Satizábal Atehortúa and “Estabilidad energética entre fenómenos naturales y sociales: desde el accionar positivo del ser humano” (Energetic stability between natural and social phenomena from positive action by the human being) by Omar Williams Zulueta.
