The alleged “end of the progressive cycle"

For some time now the right wing sectors have claimed that the left wing is disoriented in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and also in Europe, there is an end to the alleged progressive cycle. They base this affirmation on speculations that are very far from authenticity in the countryside and on knowledge, or the correct interpretation of the history of struggles of our Latin America and Caribbean. Or, simply they support these wishes.

There are, undoubtedly, objective and subjective elements that have led to a reduction of the offensive impetus of the so called progressive governments. Also, as is well known, the popular and
revolutionary processes do not arise linearly but suffer marches and counter marches, flows and ebbs regardless of how well they are led and popular consensus won.
But before delving deep into this issue I believe it is important to say that I prefer another name for these progressive governments; more adequate, in my humble opinion, to the reality of LAC after the rise in Venezuela of Hugo Chavez (1999). That is why I qualify these governments regarding different degrees of independence from the United States that have taken a distance from the dictates of the Washington Consensus, actively calling for Latin American and Caribbean unity and integration and for a multi polar world. If we follow these features a few countries follow this position. They are: Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Cuba, Dominica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Granada, Nicaragua, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Surinam, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Going back to the first idea, it is evident that the disappearance in 2013 of a leader of so outstanding qualities such as Hugo Chávez reduced, regardless of the brave and honest efforts of Nicolás Madura,
the rhythm of advance that led to the unity and integration of our region. Added to this is the sudden fall of prices of raw materials, that included oil; some countries having fallen into a recession, such
as Venezuela and Brazil or reduced their growth affecting the funds for the programs of redistribution of wealth and the blow to the purchasing power of the people; having to rely on international credits, primarily from China, to compensate for the fall of incomes in foreign currency. Added to this are errors and insufficiencies of the management of the governments and practice of their parties.

But before 2013 a fundamental counter offensive had begun by the United States and oligarchies against independent governments and against unity and integration of the LAC, from an attack of the
Yankee-Uribe forces against Ecuadorian territory and re establishment of the 6th Fleet by Washington (2008) to the successful coups against the presidents Zelaya and Lugo in Honduras (2009) and Paraguay (2012) respectively and the defeats in Bolivia (2008) and Ecuador (2012) against Evo and Correa. All this preceded by the blow and oil boycott in Venezuela (2002-2003) and continued permanently the destabilizing harassment against those governments. It is an effort of the so called US cultural industries – including the corporate conglomerates of mass media of LAC – literally substituting weapons of war by media intents of poisoning, stultifying and deceiving millions of persons. It is clearly visible today in Brazil, Ecuador and Argentina. Add to this the US programs formed by activists of the revolutionary techniques of colors that include the use of social digital networks.

Today we see the priority attack against Maduro, against Correa, Dilma and Lula, the harassment of Sánchez Serén. But there is no end of the cycle. What is evident is the coup system of the right wing due to their impossibility of winning elections in those governments.

The reason is simple. In spite of the international economic crisis that also hits and hard against developed nations such as the United States,Germany, France and Japan, the independent governments of Washington have incomparable social achievements in LAC for those who never had anything. Eliminating from poverty millions of persons, taking to the classroom millions of students, appreciably extending medical attention and raising the quality of life of their populations.
