A year after 17D.

Frustrating proof that can be the policy of Obama for Cuba it gave Yahoo News released two days ago. Regardless of the reasons the White House it saved us with the characteristic efficiency and not quotes the declarations of the President, keeping their distance in the issue. Obama repeats the conditions for Cuba and like the Cheshire cat – all changes that change nothing in the intentions towards the Island – now a year after.

Barely a year of the announcements of both Presidents, I remember 17D with nostalgia. A strange and perhaps inexplicable nostalgia, but definitely nostalgia. García Márquez explained that it is in the depth of a reactionary sentiment, an emotion that paints things another color and places where they don’t hurt. True. In any case I want to point out; however, a word does not have to be taken in its political definition to understand the feelings that surfaced that day.
Before eight in the morning of that December 17 2014 the blockade and hostile horizon was still the same and minutes later came the announcement that Raúl and Obama would appear on television. We were surprised by the reestablishment of relations and the beginning of a process of normalization of relations between Cuba and the US – later we would understand that were two different things – that would have different speeds – But that was secondary then. The three remaining that we wanted back were brought back that day. It only seemed important that Gerardo, Ramón and Antonio were back and I can’t remember such joy shared at the end of December. From my window I could see the people take another route, another rhythm, embrace two who had never seen each other would hug on the edge of the sidewalk.

With the settled down we discovered that it is not so easy to break down the wall the United States has built for half a century and proof is the words in English are followed by a “change” of policy, the obsession to “democratize” us is intact. Of course, it is preferable to handle an insult than a stab in the back and we Cubans are specially prepared to wait. From the cradle in the issues of relations between the two countries are misfortunes and joys never seen with anticipation and we learned, consequently, not to make an illusion and arm ourselves with patience.

Well today, a few hours from another 17D the sun rises with a slight rain and the avenue begins its calm Sunday rhythm. I wonder what had done those waling under my window that day; what they feel now, what necessary works have not been said or written since then. I feel vertigo contemplating the coming and goings under my feet without embraces that had brought the news that the five were in Cuba. The nostalgia my dear Gabo is also this, to look from above or afar and imagine that we have an ancient emotion that serves, at least, to re hydrate the skin.

The proof of the frustrating the policy that Obama has reached for Cuba is an interview he gave to Yahoo News and the web site released two days ago. Regardless of the reasons the White House had to save us with their characteristic efficiency to avoid having to transcribe the declarations of the President, somehow taking distance from the issue. Obama repeats the conditions for Cuba and the Cheshire cat grin – that all change, nothing changes in its intentions towards the Island – now surfaces a year later. Below is a conscientious version of the interview granted to Yahoo! The first published in Spanish and published today in the Granma daily.
