The New Challenges Opening Up. CUBA - US

Early in 2009, when the Barack Obama administration had begun, we spoke of his strategy of a policy towards Cuba. Some thought that it was just a bit of the same; we did not see it that way. According to our hypothesis we said that the new President of the United States had divided the blockade in two parts.

Meanwhile everything about the blockade had a direct relationship with civilian society, with the common men and women in Cuba. Obama tried to make it more flexible as he began to do during the first six months of 2009 by abolishing the restrictions Bush (son) had imposed on Cuba regarding remittances, packages, visas, etc. The blockade had a direct relationship with the policy and administration of the country. In other words, with the government of Obama, he applied incredible pressure. Mostly on the measures of financial sanctions imposed by various members of Banking such as the penalty of 8 billion dollars on the French Banco Paribas, for having had relations with Cuba.

Obama was extremely consistent with the blockade, regarding those sanctions intent to apply the Cuban government in a difficult situation in the midst of the economic crisis Cuba is undergoing. It placed the island in a very complex position suffering a brutal aggression of the U.S. policy; at least financially as never before done by a previous administration against our country. It could be said that Obama was consistent in exploiting the measures of the blockade to attack Cuba until, finally, in the midst of negotiations with Cuba he understood that that policy was a failure, that the policy of isolation followed for more than fifty years had yielded no results. That is why Obama, last December 17 stated that until then the policy followed was a failure.

The key point of the current policy of the United States will be different to the previous policy. Obama will negotiation with the Cuban government using a broad aggressive diplomacy that is already in view directed to the re establishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba. This will allow approaching closely the process of transformation undergoing in the Island, directing his actions to steal the control from the Cuban leadership, lead the changes Cuba must do and guiding these towards the interests of the United States.

Obama offers many facilities that are suspicious and misgivings over the true intentions; but neither with misgivings or suspicions the people will solve their problems. Those who opposed this policy would appear like fools.

Then, the central strategy against Cuba remains: the blockade and the tactics have not varied. They continue to be the same as at the beginning in 2009 although more widespread ad strengthened to keep Cuban civilian society at the center of its strategy of subversion by the United States.

Still facing all the challenges of this process; if Cuba achieves its purposes it will have more possibility of moving forward than if the United States decides to maintain that today is called an old policy.

Consequently the struggle that begins will be long and difficult, full of internal challenges and political demands as never before that will not be easily solved.
