Declaration in Havana of the 9th "Nicolás Guillén" Conference and Festival of Music and Poetry in answer to the sentence of the Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic 0168/13 against Dominicans of Haitian descent.
Haiti, "what does it mean for the Cubans of yesterday and today? Guillén said that its history was made "with the blood of the people accustomed from birth to struggle and die for their rights". This reality hasn't changed much.
Today the Nicolás Guillén Foundation as part of this event repeats the painful event for all Caribbean nations: the decision of the Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic to deprive of citizenship the sons and daughters of foreigners with irregular status born in the country after 1929. This law, that does not express the true feelings of the Dominican people, not only goes against humanitarian principles but opposes the principles of Caribbean
integrity that we defend and that Guillén defended in his prose and poetry and creates a serious situation of neglect and discrimination for those born in Dominican soil, descendants of humble Haitian men and women who came to this country, most seeking work.
We call on all intellectuals to raise their voice against these measures, fundamentally based on discrimination. In this discrimination based on ignorance and marginal stereotypes as our national poet said.
"Any ship can take us from Havana to New York or Buenos Aires, but none go to Haiti. It seems that, in fact, nothing or almost nothing is known of that land that lives among us. Two reasons, the language on the one hand and racial prejudice on another, that could have contributed to worsen even more the situation regarding Haiti and its insular quality in America, beginning with the Antilles, their neighbors and friends of the Caribbean" (1975).
Let us choose only one of our destinations since solidarity is the only road to a future of dignity for all as Nicolás wanted.
