Cuba will Continue to Defend Just Causes Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez addressed the UN Human Rights Council

Geneva, March 2. Cuba ratified here its commitment to the human rights of its people and the world when Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla addressed the 28th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. The Cuban Revolution will continue defending, tirelessly and with equal determination, just causes, knowing that Homeland is Humanity, he said.

The 842 million hungry people in the world, the 774 million illiterate adults and six million children who die every year from preventable diseases as a result of an exclusive, unjust and unequal international order, not part of the particular vision of the North on human rights and fundamental freedoms, should be given a voice in this room, " said the head of the MFA.

Rodriguez said that Cuba remains committed to a genuine international cooperation, based on the indivisibility, non-selectivity and non-politicization of human rights.

It is also committed to continue the struggle to establish a more just, democratic and equitable international order to remove the barriers to national efforts for the realization of all human rights.

He reiterated that despite its shortcomings and difficulties, Cuba has shared and continues to share its achievements and experiences with other nations, with whom we have contributed selflessly to the realization of human rights of other peoples of the world and specifically its participation in Africa in the fight against the deadly Ebola virus.

We maintain a high level of cooperation and interaction with the procedures and mechanisms of the UN in the universal application of human rights and a positive dialogue with bodies established under international treaties.
In that sense, he announced, we are sending an invitation to the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons to visit our country, he added.

Also, he said, we have agreed with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, to resume Bilateral Political HLD and continue to be involved on the reciprocal basis agreed, of sovereign equality, mutual respect, non-interference in domestic matters and respect for the laws of the parties, negotiating a Cooperation Agreement between the EU and Cuba.

During his speech in Geneva he reiterated Cuba´s position on the process of restoring relations with the United States.

Aware that we have profound differences with the US Government in the field of political systems, democracy, human rights and international law and with the will of both countries they can advance within them civilly, we proposed last July to sustain a dialogue in mutually respectful and reciprocal conditions, he said.

The diplomat added that the State Department announced its acceptance in recent days and the dialogue will begin in the coming weeks.

The Cuban minister again denounced the economic, commercial and financial blockade by the US on Cuba for over 50 years, which he stressed, is a flagrant, massive and systematic violation of the human rights of all Cubans.

However, he acknowledged that the Cuban Government appreciates the approach of US President Barack Obama, that the blockade causes damage to the Cuban people and his willingness to engage in a debate with the US Congress with a view to its elimination, said the Chancellor.

He explained that they also agreed with the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, resume bilateral high-level dialogue.

He also stated support for the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to have their own state, in the pre-1967 borders with its capital in East Jerusalem.

Regarding Venezuela, he reiterated the strong condemnation of the unacceptable and unjustified unilateral sanctions against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, and the continued external intervention in order to create a climate of instability in that sister nation.

"We reaffirm our strong support for the Bolivarian Revolution and the legitimate government of President Nicolas Maduro," he said.
