COUNCIL OF HUMAN RIGHTS RAPPORTEURS IN CUBA

Havana, Cuba. February 19, 2008.

COUNCIL OF HUMAN RIGHTS RAPPORTEURS IN CUBA

Declaration

We do not agree with a transfer of power. The Cuban people urgently need a peaceful transition to democracy. It would be a blessing that this would come from the government itself. The regime will benefit from an obsolescent continuity in power while this would result in an unparallel disgraceful event for Cuba.

We are content to hear of Mr. Fidel Castro’s ‘resignation”, though it is the natural consequence of the course of time. Nevertheless, as a result of this event, the power of Jesus Christ, or the capacity of men, the freedom of Cuba is near and no one will be able to prevent it. All Cubans as well as the international community must be ready for this.

The Cuban people cannot continue suffering offense to their dignity or violations to their human rights. A government under the leadership of any human being must begin by respecting the rights of the Cuban people. This is essential in order to speak of a new beginning for Cuba.
